Ranger shot in clash with insurgents

A soldier was wounded when paramilitary rangers clashed with insurgents on Tawae mountain in Rangae district of Narathiwat on Saturday.

The clash began around noon when paramilitary rangers were deployed to the mountain in tambon Bo Ngo. They were responding to reports that a group of armed men had been using the area as a base to carry out violent attacks in Rangae district.

On seeing the officers, five or six insurgents opened fire, prompting the rangers to return fire. Both clashed for about 10 minutes before the insurgents retreated into the forest.

The exchange of gunfire left Sgt Maj Arkhom Ruamsuk injured. He was taken to a hospital, while the other officers continued their hunt for the insurgents, who were believed to have fled to areas between Rangae and Cho Airong districts.
