The air force has yet to determine the cause of the F-16 crash in Lop Buri province that killed its pilot on Friday afternoon.

At the crash site in a cassava field 300 metres from the closest community, the security team found a large hole and airplane parts scattered as far as 200 metres.

Inside the cockpit, they found the body of the 30-year-old pilot, Flt Lt Noppanon Nivasanont, a native of Sa Kaeo province.

Air force spokesman ACM Monthon Sutchukorn said all the pieces were collected for further processing to determine the cause but said there was no flight data recorder on the plane.

"All models of military planes do not have black boxes, except for those used for transport such as the Airbus 310 or 319," he said.

The F-16 in question had been in the air force fleet since 1988 and was maintained regularly, earlier reports said.

The body of Flt Lt Noppanon was brought to Anandamahidol Hospital in the province. It will be moved to Bangkok early on Sunday.

The funeral rites will be held for seven days at Wat Phra Si Maha That in Bang Khen district. The cremation will be held on March 1.

Flt Lt Noppanon will receive a 7-rank promotion to group captain in line with the regulation on rewards for officers who die on duty. His family will also receive 2.4 million baht in welfare aid.
