Two inmates killed in prison gang brawl

KANCHANABURI — Two inmates at Thong Pha Phum District Prison were killed and five others injured in gang brawl involving about 30 inmates on Sunday.

The fight broke out at 11am between a group of drug convicts from Tha Maka district and another group from Bo Phloi and Muang districts during their leisure time activities and outdoor exercise on an open ground. They were armed with sharp objects.

Prison guards were able to break up the brawl shortly before an 80-strong team of police and military officers arrived. Seven inmates were injured by stab wounds, two of them seriously. Officials collected 31 self-made sharp objects of varying sizes at the scene.

The badly-hurt inmates, who were from Tha Maka, succumbed to their injuries in hospital. They were named as Surasak Jaiyen, 23, and Terdsak Klomgwong, 28. Both suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso.

Pol Col Wuthipong Yenjit, chief of Tha Maka police station, said the two groups had been at odds with each other. Before the incident, he said, the Tha Maka inmates had rebuked their rival cellmates for breaching regulations on use of living quarters. The two sides met during recreation time and had a fierce verbal argument that turned into a deadly fight.
