Prison warden transferred after brawl

Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya has ordered the transfer of the warden of Thong Phaphum prison in Kanchanaburi province following a violent brawl on Sunday in which two inmates were killed and six injured, Corrections Department chief Witthaya Suriyawong said.

Mr Witthaya said Gen Paiboon ordered the transfer of Paithoon Wisetsiri immediately after being briefed on the violence inside the prison.

A panel would be set up to investigate how weapons had been smuggled into the prison.

Thong Phaphum prison has about 900 inmates, most of them serving drug-related sentences.

Mr Witthaya said the clash on Sunday was between two feuding gangs of prisoners - the Bo Phloy and Thong Phaphum groups.

He said he had instructed all prisons to regularly check to make sure inmates had no weapons hidden in their cells.

It is a main department policy to separate inmates in drug cases from other prisoners to break up the drug dealing cycle.
