Cambodia visit 'not about Preah Vihear'

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has denied speculation that Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon's visited Cambodia on Monday to discuss the Preah Vihear temple dispute, energy and red-shirt fugitives.

Border cooperation was the reason for the visit, Gen Prayut said.

Hun Sen: Met Gen Prawit for lunch

"This trip is to discuss border trade and checkpoints. It has nothing to do with Preah Vihear issues or other mutual interests. If the [Preah Vihear] situation is peaceful, let it continue," Gen Prayut said.

Cambodia and Thailand are involved in a dispute over land adjoining the ancient Hindu temple. The International Court of Justice ruled in November 2013 the disputed land belongs to Cambodia and ordered Thai military personnel to leave the area.

Gen Prawit, who is also deputy prime minister, left for Cambodia from Don Mueang military airport yesterday for a one-day visit.

He was accompanied by an entourage of 15, which included army chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr, Deputy Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and defence permanent secretary Gen Sirichai Dithakul.

They were scheduled to have lunch with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

According to a source, the trip was made in secret and the real purpose of Gen Prawit's visit was to discuss the Preah Vihear temple dispute, energy and Thai red shirts who fled the country to avoid a lese majeste crackdown.
