The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on Tuesday ruled to expand its probe into alleged overspending on a Government House refurbishment project. The anti-graft agency decided to set up an investigative sub-panel, headed by NACC commissioner Prasart Pongsivapai, to examine the procurement of 190 Bosch microphones and other materials used in the 67-million-baht project.

According to NACC commissioner and spokesman Vicha Mahakun, the anti-graft agency will further its investigation into six employees from the Department of Public Works and Town And Country Planning, including director-general Monton Sudprasert and his deputy.

In its initial examination, the NACC found Mr Monton and the department's committee could be charged with malfeasance and colluding to benefit private sector companies involved in the refurbishment.

The probe would not concern top-level executives at Government House who oversaw the project, Mr Vicha said. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Social Development and Human Security Minister Pol Gen Adul Sangsingkeo and PM's Office Minister ML Panadda Diskul will not be investigated further.

Mr Monton said he was currently preparing evidence relating to the procurement process to present to the NACC.

The refurbishment project was conducted within a very short time frame, he said, and if any errors had occurred, as the official in charge of the department, he would take responsibility.

Each of the 190 Bosch microphones used in the refurbishment reportedly cost 145,000 baht each, while the same product was advertised on the company's website for 55,000 baht.

Last September, a military-appointed investigation committee found no irregularities in the procurement process.
