Sappasit: Accused of aiding B1.4bn theft

Sappasit Limnorarat, the former deputy rector for finance at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), reported to the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) on Wednesday and denied any involvement in the 1.4-billion-baht embezzlement scandal.

Mr Sappasit faces charges of theft, document forgery, embezzlement, dereliction of duty and money laundering in the scam that prompted a far-reaching investigation and reforms at the institute.

He acknowledged the charges yesterday in questioning with Pol Col Nos Sawettalek, deputy CSD chief who is in charge of the investigation, and was released on bail with a surety of 5 million baht.

This came one day after former KMITL rector Thawil Phuengma reported to the CSD in the same case and also denied wrongdoing.

Another suspect, KMITL lecturer Sarut Ratchaburi, turned himself in to the CSD authorities on Tuesday.

Speaking before meeting Pol Col Nos, Mr Sappasit said he was appointed as deputy rector for finance of the KMITL between January and November 2013, and the illegal transfers of money from the university's bank accounts began sometime in 2012.

The transfers continued into last year.

He insisted he had strictly followed KMITL regulations and had never committed any crimes.

Mr Sappasit said he graduated from the KMITL and has been working as a teacher for more than 23 years, long enough for others at the institution to testify to his character.

As for Songklod Sriprasong, a suspect who used to work for the Siam Commercial Bank's branch at the KMITL and had been arrested previously in connection with the embezzlement case, Mr Sappasit  said that he knew Mr Songklod not on a personal basis, but because the latter took care of the bank accounts of the KMITL.
