A male elephant calf has died after becoming trapped in mud in a shallow well in Kui Buri National Park.

The dead elephant, aged between three and five years old, was recovered on Tuesday from a one-metre deep well, dug by local villagers. Officials believed he had been dead for no more than three days.

The elephant cub must have gone to drink from the well but accidentally fell in and was unable to free himself from the mud at the bottom, Sisawat Bunma, kamnan of tambon Hat Kham in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Kui Buri district said.

Officials believe the baby elephant became separated from his herd or was left behind because of ill health.
