Red Cross urges blood donations

People should donate blood regularly as blood bank supplies are not meeting daily needs in hospitals, the Thai Red Cross Society says.

The national blood bank faces a blood supply crisis, Soisaang Phikulsod, director of the National Blood Centre of the Thai Red Cross Society, said in a statement.

Shortages mean the centre can now supply only 2,000 units a day to hospitals, far below the daily demand of 8,000 units.

People should donate blood every three months, and not just on special occasions, Dr Soisaang said.

In Bangkok, donations can be made at the National Blood Centre on Henri Dunant Road on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 4.30pm; Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30am to 7.30pm; and weekends and holidays from 8.30am to 3.30pm.
