Poll shows 80% govt approval

More than 80% of the country is satisfied with the government's performance over the past six months under Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, although respondents noted some weak points, a Suan Dusit poll reports.

The poll questioned 1,632 people around the country between Feb 20 and Saturday about the government.

Asked whether they were satisfied with its performance, 53.9% of respondents said they were moderately satisfied, 27.5% were very satisfied, 12.1% were rather dissatisfied and 6.45% were not satisfied at all.

Asked which government actions impressed them most, 87.25% pointed to assistance to farmers and payment for pledged rice, 81% to suppression of corruption in both the public and private sectors, 76.35% to the policies of various ministries which aim to help the people, 74.5% to the development of mass transport and a roadmap for high-speed trains, and 66% to improvements in foreign relations.

Asked about the military government's weak points, 82.1% pointed to its inability to solve the country's education problems, the high cost of living, and drug use; 75.9% to restrictions on expression of opinion; 71.69% to its lack of experience and expertise in some fields; 70.3% to a lack of self-assessments; and 69% to a lack of recognition from foreign countries for being unelected.
