Tourist van accident kills 1, injures 14

CHIANG MAI - A passenger van travelling from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son veered off a road in Pai district on Thursday, killing one passenger and injuring 14 others, police said.

Pol Capt Pichit Saeka, duty officer of Pai police station in Mae Hong Son, said the van operated by Prem Pracha Transport Co overshot a curve between kilometre markers 81 and 82 on Road 1095.

The crash killed one passenger and injured 14 others, including the driver.

Most of the passengers were tourists. The van left Chiang Mai about noon and crashed about 2.35pm as it was leaving Pai and heading into Muang district in Mae Hong Son.

Police have not released the names of the victims. The injured were sent to Pai hospital.

A preliminary report said the driver possibly fell asleep at the wheel.
