Bangkok Post wins picture of year award

The Bangkok Post has won the best picture from this year's Isra Amantakul Awards.

The picture titled "I'm not involved" and taken by Post photographer Thiti Wannamontha won the Picture of the Year from five images short-listed for the final round of the prestigious award.

The picture was taken on March 24, 2014 in front of the National Anti-Corruption Commission office in Nonthaburi where a group of red-shirt members led by Sornrak Malaithong, leader of the People's Radio for Democracy Group, staged a protest outside the gate against the graft busters' decision to charge then-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra in relation to the rice-pledging scheme.

Phra Prat Supavirun from Kalasin was assaulted by the protesters who mistook him for an anti-government member.

The monk said he was travelling past the rally site to attend a funeral ceremony at his relative's house in the area but a protester accused him of not being a monk and attacked him.

''The attack continued with a woman urging fellow protesters to disrobe the monk,'' recalled Mr Thiti, who was assigned to cover the rally on that day. ''Everything happened very fast and it was difficult to take the photo with so many people surrounding the monk.''

The award earned him 50,000 baht in cash and a plaque to honour his achievement.

Another picture titled ''Flee'' taken by Thanarak Khunton was named one of the honourary mentioned pictures this year.

The picture taken by Bangkok Post photographer Thiti Wannamontha wins the top prize of the Isra Amantakul Awards on Thursday.
