A Chinese tourist sought help from police after a thief snatched her shoulder bag containing cash and valuables worth about 50,000 baht in Pattaya late Tuesday night.

The 51-year-old Chinese woman, accompanied by a hotel staffer, filed a complaint with Pol Lt Jakkrit Chankhamta, a duty officer at Pattaya police station, around 12.30am on Wednesday shortly after the incident.

She told police via an interpreter she was walking near the entrance of Soi 16/3 off Pattaya-Na Klua Road in Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district around midnight and a man came up behind her on a motorcycle and  snatched her bag off her shoulder.

She said the thief made off with about 7,000 yuan and 1,000 baht in cash, a diamond-studded ring, and a Buddha amulet and some necessary documents.

She ran to seek help from the hotel where she stayed and a security guard took her to file a complaint with police. She said it could cause problems because she is due to return home tomorrow.

Bag snatching is reported to be common on Pattaya-Na Klua Road and on Soi Wong Amart lately, with several tourists falling victim to the thieves despite frequent police patrols.
