Bus kills 2 road workers, injures 3 others

Two employees of the Highways Department were killed and three others seriously injured when a tour bus rammed into the rear of their pick-up truck, which was parked on the shoulder of the north-bound lanes of the Mitrapap highway in Muang district of Khon Kaen province, on Wednesday morning, police said.

The accident occurred about 11am at Ban Sam Chan in tambon Non Thon of Khon Kaen's Muang district.

Jakri Srinonmuang, a Highways Department employee, said he and the truck driver Sao Sirisom were out of the vehicle collecting signboards from the side of the road. There were five workers still on the truck.

A bus operated by Charn Tour Company heading for Khon Kaen rammed into the rear of the stationary pick-up, killing two workers and seriously injuring the three others.

The dead highways employees were identified as Jongkol Singto, 57, and Suchart Buaphan, 52. The injured, Khampan Somwang, 48, Angkarn Wongchaiya, 35, and Boonnak Marod, 48, were admitted to Srinakarin Hospital in Khon Kaen.

Pol Capt Natthawat Suthisa, of Samran police sub-station, said the driver of the tour bus was also injured and had not  been identified. He was admitted to Nam Phong Hospital in Nam Phong district.

Police were investigating the accident.
