Self-immolated indebted woman dies

A Lop Buri woman burdened with debt who set herself on fire near Government House on Oct 14 last year died on Monday night at Vajira Hospital, according to Thairath Online.

Sangvean Raksaphet, 52, of tambon Wangchan in Lop Buri's Khok Samrong district, went to the Government House people's service centre on Oct 14 and submitted a complaint about her debt.

The woman said she had borrowed from Tidarat Thep-arak, a local creditor, using her land title deeds as collateral.

After she missed several repayments, Ms Tidarat demanded 1.5 million baht from her in accumulated debt.  Mrs Sangvean, believing she was being cheated, went to file a complaint with the centre, a unit under the Office of the Prime Minister's Permanent Secretary.

While Suksavat Suwannawong, chief of the complaint centre, was contacting a Khok Samrong assistant  district chief in Lop Buri by phone to ask for more details about the debt, Mrs Sangvean said: "Why can't you help me?"

She then took out a bottle of petrol, poured the fuel over herself and set it ablaze with a lighter.

Mrs Sangvean sufferred burns to 40% of her body and was immediately admitted to Vajira Hospital for treatment.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered the authorities to provide full assistance to her.

The woman died at the hospital about 10pm on Monday, the report said.
