The tourism association in Chiang Mai is advising domestic travellers planning to visit the city during Songkran to book their accommodation early, with the city anticipating a rise of 15-20% in tourists during the festival this year.

Pornchai Jitnawasatian, president of the Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association, said it was estimated at least  60% of independent travelers had already reserved their accommodation and tour agents had also booked rooms for their clients.

He expected  few if any cancellations even though Chiang Mai is currently experiencing its worst smoke-haze pollution ever.

Mr Pornchai believed there would be rain around the end of March or early April and this would help clear the air of haze.

The association predicted the number of visitors to Chiang Mai’s Songkran festival, to be held between April 12 and 15, will rise by 15-20% over last year with the largest number coming from China.

Mr Pornchai warned Thai tourists planning to enjoy the festival in Chiang Mai to book their accommodation early, as there might not be rooms available for walk-in guests.
