Siam Centre tops a list of 10 shopping centres in Bangkok that cause the most traffic congestion in the current hot weather, according to city police.

Pol Maj Gen Niphon Charoenphol, deputy chief of Bangkok traffic, said hot weather had worsened traffic in the capital because people went to shopping centres more frequently, especially on weekends.

To ease vehicle flow within the centres, staff were placing cones and barricades to block some lanes on public streets, causing bottlenecks for the mainstream traffic, he said. Police had received numerous complaints about this from general motorists.

While police were trying to solve the problem, they had created a list of the top 10 malls or shopping areas that caused the biggest jams based on the information from officers at 88 stations in Greater Bangkok.

Siam Centre came first on the list, followed by Siam Square Soi 2 Road, Siam Paragon, Terminal 21, CentralWorld, Emporium, MBK, Central Ladprao, Platinum, Megabangna, and Pantip Plaza, Pol Maj Gen Niphon said.

Several of the locations are near Pathumwan and Ratchaprasong intersections.
