Onlookers and rescue workers surround the crushed Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 at the scene of a fatal accident on Charan Sanitwong Road on Saturday.

A medical student was killed after her sports car slammed into a parked truck in Bangkok Noi district on Saturday.

The accident took place on the Khlong Bangkok Noi bridge on Charan Sanitwong Road at 11.30am. Police who responded found a Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 with its bonnet crushed under a bucket truck being used in the construction of a mass-transit line in the middle of the bridge. The impact peeled the roof off the sports car.

Inside the car, they found the body of Thanatcha Kamdang, an anatomy student in the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital.

Passenger Chuthamas Muangmoon, 26, suffered injuries to her face, chest and knees. She was taken to Srivichai Hospital and was later reported in stable condition.

Panya Tawongklang, 20, an eyewitness who reported the accident to police and helped the victims, said that before crossing the bridge, a speeding Mercedes overtook him by shifting to the right lane and slammed into a parked truck there.

The right lane is normally closed to traffic because of the mass-transit construction.

Ms Juthamas, a physical therapist at a hospital, said she and Thanatcha were going home to Bang Khun Non and tried to move into the right lane so they could turn right at the Bang Khun Non intersection. But they saw a truck parked right ahead and could not stop in time.

A preliminary investigation suggested construction workers might have left the lane open and the driver might have shifted to the lane so abruptly that she could not see the truck ahead.
