Workers charged over fatal crash

Two construction workers have been charged with recklessly causing the death of a medical student after she crashed her vehicle into a crane truck in Bangkok Noi district on Saturday.

Police were alerted to the crash on a bridge over Khlong Bangkok Noi on Charan Sanitwong Road at 11.30am on Saturday.

Thanatcha Kamdaeng, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, was found dead at the scene. She was a master's degree student at the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.

The car's passenger, Juthamas Muang-moon, was injured and taken to Srivichai Hospital.

Ms Juthamas, who is a physical therapist at a hospital, suffered injuries to her face, chest and right knee.

According to police, the crash happened on the farthest right lane leading to Bang Khun Non intersection, where construction of the Blue Line electric train route is under way.

No safety barriers were on the road to warn drivers about the construction work.

Panya Tawongklang, a 30-year-old witness, told police that before crossing the bridge, the Mercedes moved across to the right lane, where it hit the crane truck.

Bangkok Noi police superintendent Thanakrit Chaijaruwut said investigators had questioned the foreman and workers who were on site when the crash happened.

Two workers were charged with recklessly causing death, and they have been released on bail, Pol Col Thanakrit said. An investigation will determine if the construction firm, Unique Engineering and Construction Plc, should take any responsibility for Thanatcha's death, he said.

Police will also interview Ms Juthamas to find out what happened in the lead-up to the crash.
