Wong Chen Jear, 29, was apprehended in the immigration area of the airport on Sunday and charged with possessing 11 counterfeit credit cards, deputy ECSD chief Sorasak Jusanit said on Monday.

Mr Jear also had five Hermes bags worth 1.1 million baht he had bought with the fake cards he allegedly brought with him from Malaysia.

Investigators began tracking him after being alerted by banks on Sunday that a Chinese-looking foreigner tried to use fake cards with different names to buy goods at PMT the Hour Glass at Gaysorn Plaza. He rushed out of the shop after staff could not verify the cards, Pol Col Sorasak said.

The officer did not say how police tracked the man down or where he bought the brandname bags after arriving in Bangkok on Saturday.

Mr Jear claimed that he was in debt to the tune of 10,000 ringgit (100,000 baht) and was ordered by the debtor to take the fake credit cards and buy as many Hermes bags and other luxury goods as possible to clear the debt he owed.

Pol Col Sorasak said police were not convinced by his story and charged him with possessing fake electronic cards.
