TRANG - A pickup truck ran into the side of a train that was passing through a crossing on a road in Muang district on Thursday, causing the locomotive to disconnect from the carriage behind it and block the line.

The train had just entered the crossing when the pickup driven by Songyuth Chimrueng, 34, rammed into it about noon. His vehicle struck the train between the locomotive and the first carriage, causing the coupling to disconnect.

Mr Songyuth was knocked unconscious and suffered two broken legs. He was rushed to hospital and later reported to be in a stable condition.

Railway workers had to recouple the locomotive to the carriages before the train could continue to Kantrang at tambon Kuan Pring in Muang  district.

Linda Chotchuang, a witness to the accident, said the pickup truck was travelling fast as it approached the crossing and then hit the train. There were no warnings at the crossing, but it had been many years since there had been an accident there.

It was the second accident involving a pickup and a train on a crossing in Trang province this week. On Tuesday a pickup driver was injured when his vehicle was hit by a train at another crossing where there are warning lights but no barriers.
