Four of the 193 Thais living in Yemen, mostly students, want to leave the war-ravaged country and will be evacuated by land to adjacent Oman, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Sek Wannamethee, spokesman of the ministry, said on Tuesday that 193 Thais were living in the cities  of Mukalla, Aden, Hudaydah and Sana'a. Four of them wanted to leave the country, two in Sana'a.

The other 189 have not requested evacuation as they live far away from the fighting.

Mr Sek, director-general of the Department of Information, said the Thai embassy in Muscat, the capital of Oman, would arrange the four Thais'  evacuation by land to the Yemen-Oman border. Evacuation by air is not considered safe.

The embassy in Muscat has sent staff to the Yemen-Oman border and to the Yemen cities where Thai students stay, offering to help. If the situation deteriorates, all Thais would be advised to evacuate.

Thailand has no embassy in Yemen. The nearest is in adjacent Oman. It has asked the embassies of Asean member states and the Gulf states in Yemen to assist if needed.
