Yemen embassy tells Thais to flee

The Thai embassy in Oman, which also covers Yemen, on Tuesday night issued an order to evacuate Thai nationals from Yemen as soon as possible, saying the civil war in the country is worsening while casualties are mounting.

In its latest statement, the Thai embassy in Muscat said other foreign diplomatic missions in Yemen have started evacuating their citizens from Yemen after continued fighting between Houthi militias and government forces.

Saudi-led air strikes in support of the government were also unlikely to end anytime soon.

The embassy urged Thais in Yemen to evacuate by first making contact with embassy staff as soon as possible.

"If Thais in Yemen insist on staying in the country, they will have to accept the risk to their valuables and lives," the embassy said.

The Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, said the evacuation had been approved by related government agencies and a plan, covering routes and carriers, had been devised to bring Thais back home safely.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed concern over the safety of Thais residing in Yemen.

The ministry recently cut its estimate for the number of Thais in Yemen from 250 to 193, all of them students.

The air force has prepared C-130 cargo planes and is ready to join the rescue mission if requested.
