Two Thai students evacuated from the violence in Yemen arrived safely at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday.

Wae-arreef Waedoyee, 19, from Narathiwat, and Faisol Makeh, 24, from Yala, arrived in Bangkok from Doha with Qatar Airways flight QR 830 and were welcomed by Wosit Worasub, deputy director-general of the Consular Affairs Department, and officials from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

The two students had been studying Modern Standard Arabic at a university in rebel-held Hudaida in western Yemen and left the area after air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition targeted an airbase in the province late last month as part of efforts to destroy the Houthi militia’s air defence capabilities.

Mr Wae-arreef said the air raid took place only 700 metres from his university and there was heavy fighting in Hudaida.

Another eight Thai students evacuated from Hudaida had reached Saudi Arabia safely in the early morning hours of Sunday Thailand time, a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Officials from the Thai embassy in Riyadh welcomed the Thai students who arrived with Malaysian evacuees, and arranged for immigration details, accommodation and food for them.

A total of 86 Thai students have notified the Thai embassy in Muscat, Oman, of their desire to  leave Yemen and authorities are in the process of evacuating them via appropriate routes and means of transportation, the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry earlier estimated about 200 Thais were in Yemen, all of them students.
