Eight provinces hard-hit by storms

Seasonal storms pounded about 50 villages in 11 districts of eight provinces on Tuesday and Wednesday, damaging more than 900 houses, according to Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Chatchai Promlert.

In Maha Sarakham, heavy rain and gusting winds hit Nachuak district, damaging 118 houses and two salt warehouses.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, many villages in Chum Phuang district were struck by rain and strong winds, causing damage to 41 houses, six rice barns, one ricemill and one government office.

Sixty-one houses and a temple building were damaged in Muang and Moei Wadi districts of Roi Et  province.

In Sa Kaeo province, a total of 49 houses were damaged in Taphraya and Wang Somboon districts.  One person was killed and another injured when a freak storm roared through a village in Ta Phraya district.

Kranuan district of Khon Kaen province was heavily damaged by storms which partly destroyed 340 houses.

More than 340 houses were reported damaged in Ban Khok district of Uttaradit province.

In Nakhon Phanom, heavy rain and storms wreaked havoc in Phon Sawan district where Tha Uthen - Phon Sawan road was blocked at many spots by fallen trees. Seventeen houses were damaged in Tha Uthen district.

In Phu Phan district of Sakon Nakhon province, a large tree was brought down by a storm. It crushed four vehicles and injured three people.

The Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued another storm warning for people in the upper part of the country.

It said a high pressure system now extends over upper Thailand and the South China Sea. 

Summer thunderstorms, as well as isolated gusty winds and hail, are expected in the North, Northeast, Central and East regions.

People in these areas should be alert for possible severe weather and keep away from unsound buildings and other risky structures until April 9, the department said.
