PM vows to battle state corruption

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha says he plans to ensure state officials who are found guilty of corruption and irregularities are brought to justice.

He was responding to a move by the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), which on Friday submitted a list of more than 100 alleged corrupt state officials to Gen Prayut.

The list was delivered via the Prime Minister's Office yesterday by Prayong Priyajit, the PACC secretary-general.

Gen Prayut said he would call on the executives of the agencies where the named officials work to explain the accusations.

"I have seen the list. There are a lot [of accused officials], including senior ones such as director-generals," he said.

He said the process would be done in line with the law and the accused officials will be investigated.

"If found guilty, they must be dismissed and face criminal charges but for junior officials, a probe must be carried out to find whether their bosses ordered the wrongdoings," the premier said.

He said he ordered law enforcement officials to look into any accusations after the May 22 coup last year.

Mr Prayong said he was assigned by Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya to deliver the list to the prime minister for further action. It is now up to Gen Prayut to decide how to move ahead with disciplinary action against those officials, said the secretary-general, adding the PACC would press ahead with criminal charges against officials found to have committed wrongdoing.

Mr Prayong said from now on, the PACC will send a list of corrupt officials to the prime minister every month. Alleged corrupt officials fell under suspicion after complaints from various parties, he said.

The Interior Ministry and police officers face the most complaints over corruption and irregularities.

Gen Prayut will have the final say over disciplinary measures in his role as chairman of the national anti-graft committee, which was set up by the National Council for Peace and Order.
