Chinese man drowns near Pattaya

An elderly Chinese tourist drowned off Koh Larn in Chon Buri Friday while swimming with his compatriots at the Pattaya tourist island.

The 71-year-old visitor suddenly collapsed, said Pol Lt Col Possawat Siripornnoppakhun, a duty officer at Pattaya police station, who was alerted at 11.30am on Friday.

Lifeguards rushed to search for his body, which was pulled to shore. First aid was administered, but proved futile. There were no traces of bruises or struggles on his body.

According to a police investigation, the dead tourist was a member of a Chinese tour group visiting Pattaya. Before the tragedy, a tour guide took the group to visit Tawaen beach on Koh Larn in Bang Lamung district and later let the tourists swim or go shopping in the area.

Police were investigating and sent the body to Police General Hospital for a postmortem to officially establish the cause of death.
