A taxi driver who struck a traffic police officer with his cab and then allegedly used the latter's gun to kill a couple in Nonthaburi has turned himself in to face murder charges.

Anuphong Ruagswad, 29, of Nakhon Sawan, accompanied by his family, surrendered to Taling Chan police on Saturday morning and was taken into custody.

His surrender came after Pol Lt Gen Amnuay Nimmano, commander of Provincial Police Region 1, ordered a manhunt.

Police said the suspect used his cab to knock down Pol Sr Sgt Maj Chakki Palasing, 45, who was directing traffic near Wat Phra Ngern on Kanchanaphisek Road in Bang Yai district of Nonthaburi on Friday. He then made off with the officer's 9mm pistol.

The officer sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He is now in stable condition and has been transferred to Police General Hospital.

Mr Anuphong then drove his taxi to the Chanthra dormitory in tambon Bang Mae Nang in the same district and used the pistol to kill the dormitory owner and his wife at around 6.30pm on Friday, police said.

The suspect went into hiding before re-emerging on Saturday to surrender.

Police say Mr Anuphong claimed he discarded the stolen gun at a petrol station in the Navanakorn area. They plan to take him there to retrieve it.
