Firefighters try to contain dump fire

SAMUT PRAKAN - Firefighters are struggling to contain a fire that erupted in a rubbish dump in Bang Phli district of this province early Tuesday.

The blaze appeared under control around 1.30pm with only thick smoke visible at the privately owned landfill. But Jor Sor 100 reported that the blaze erupted again around 7pm forcing officials to order engines to try again.

Samut Prakan governor Pinit Harnpanich, who visited the site, admitted that it could take about 24 hours for firefighters to control the situation, INN said.

The fire torched 30 rai of land. Pol Maj Gen Thana Chuwong, chief of the provincial police force, said firefighters were now limiting the fire to just three rai.

Officials have not identified the cause of the fire and said the hot weather could be the cause. The name of the company owning the site was not disclosed.
