The Army deployed more soldiers and equipment to put out the fire at a privately owned dump site in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan on Wednesday.

Deputy army spokesperson Sirichan Ngathong said soldiers from the 21st Artillery Battalion had helped local authorities put out the fire in Bang Pla sub-district since Tuesday. Since they could not extinguish the blaze, a disaster relief company of the 11th Infantry Regiment was deployed along with their fire engines on Wednesday.

Backhoes were used to dig up garbage so that fire fighters could quench subsurface landfill fire. Soldiers and volunteers were also trying to contain the area of the fire at the dump site.

All concerned parties tried to put out the fire within Wednesday, Col Sirichan said.

The fire covered about six rai at the dump site which had been closed for three years. About 20 fire engines and seven backhoes were used to fight the fire.
