NBTC takes Peace

NBTC takes Peace

The National Broadcasting Television Commission (NBTC) has revoked the licence of satellite television channel Peace TV for repeatedly airing content deemed to instigate unrest.

The television channel has now shut down, according to Col Natee Sukonrat, chairman of the NBTC’s broadcast committee.

The red shirt-affiliated channel had been blacked out from April 10-17 by the NBTC for running programmes that could incite conflicts.

The NBTC had warned Peace TV executives about the channel’s content several times from October 2014, Col Natee wrote on his Facebook page.

The channel promised to review its content following the seven-day suspension this month, but when the channel returned the problem remained, he added.

Nattawut Saikuar, red shirt co-leader, said the channel may petition the Administrative Court to seek an injunction against the order. “Our legal team will challenge the decision and protect our rights. We may appeal against the committee’s decision and seek an Administrative Court injunction,” said Mr Nattawut.

He said the channel aired diverse opinions which could help in forging national reconciliation and drafting the new constitution.

The move to shut down the channel shows the people in power refuse to listen to different opinions, he said.
