Emergency landing in Phuket after passenger passes out

An Etihad Airways flight made an emergency landing in Phuket on Tuesday night after a woman passenger with cancer passed out inflight and later died at a hospital on the resort island.

Phuket air traffic control received a request from the pilot of the Abu Dabi to Singapore flight to allow an emergency landing around 9pm Tuesday, Thani Chuangchu, deputy director of Phuket airport, said. 

He said a passenger on the flight was reported to have fallen unconscious.

An ambulance was put on standby and after the plane landed the unconscious passenger and her three relatives also on the plane were rushed to Thalang hospital.  She did not awaken and was later declared dead.

Suhaila Obaid Amer Alaleeli, 67, a United Arab Emirates national, suffered from cancer and went into shock during the flight, Mr Thani said.

Her body was being kept at Thalang hospital.
