Bid to promote wearing Thai-made clothes

A campaign will be launched for both Thais and tourists to wear clothes made of Thai-made fabric every Friday, according to Sports and Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.

The decision was made at a tourism-promotion meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday afternoon.

The campaign, to be endorsed by the cabinet on Tuesday, focuses on promoting "local identity". Using more Thai-made products will also benefit income distribution, she said.

The meeting also acknowledged the latest tourism figures in the first quarter.

During the period, the number of foreign tourists jumped 24% year-on-year to 7.84 million, bringing in 370 billion baht, up 18%, she said.

The number of domestic tourists also rose 6% to 38.37 million. They spent 6% more year-on-year to 133 billion baht.

During the May 1-6 holiday, arrivals rose 15% while 1% more Thais travelled abroad and 2.1 million Thais travelled locally.

The province which saw the biggest jump in tourism revenue was Nan while Nakhon Si Thammarat led in terms of tourist numbers.

But Sophon Pornchokchai, chairman of the Agency for Real Estate Affairs, wrote in a statement released on Saturday the first-quarter tourism figures might be misleading.

He pointed out the 24% increase in arrivals between January and March was largely due to Chinese tourist numbers, which more than doubled following a visa waiver by Thai authorities.

At the same time, the number of Russian tourists dropped by 53% to 323,552 due to the lacklustre economy at home.

Excluding tourists from Asean, China and Russia, the increase was a mere 12%, he said.

Although more Chinese came to Thailand in the first quarter, their spending was less than other groups, he said.
