Woman hurt in car-train crash

PHETCHABURI — A woman was seriously injured after her car was struck by a Bangkok-bound train at an unguarded railroad crossing in Khao Yoi district on Sunday.

Police said the Bangkok-registered Honda driven by Puangpaka Kaewchainan, 28, cut in front of Bangkok-Yala express train No.170 about 300 metres from Khao Yoi train station in the morning. The car was heavily damaged by the collision and was knocked into the trackside ditch, trapping the Pathum Thani native.

Paramedics called to the scene found Puangpaka unconscious and put her on a ventilator while rushing her to hospital. The crash caused damage to the train’s locomotive.

Aumporn Timsorn, the train’s driver, told police both sides of the tracks were covered with overgrown grass and the crossing had no barrier installed. He said the car suddenly cut him off, claiming the driver drove past the track without looking to see if a train was coming.
