Thai families customarily offer small gifts, such as reusable grocery bags, herbal inhalers and key chains to people attending marriage ceremonies or funerals, as a sign of gratitude and appreciation.
A family in Ayutthaya went one better.
On Wednesday, the funeral for Uthai Thongchat was held at Wat Kuti Thong in Ayutthaya province. About 300 people attended to pay their respects to the 57-year-old woman.
After people took part in religious rites and burned sandalwood flowers in bidding their final farewell to Uthai at the temple crematorium, the deceased's family handed each guest an envelope containing a government lottery ticket.
Most of the guests were totally surprised, as they had not expected to receive this kind of souvenir at a funeral, reports said.
Isaraporn Thongchat, daughter of the deceased, said her mother bought lottery tickets every month.
"I sell lottery tickets for a living in Petchaburi, so I decided to give my quota of 300 lottery tickets allocated by the government, worth 30,000 baht, to the people who came to the ceremony.
"I'm doing this for my mum because she liked betting and I want these people to win a fortune, and the lottery result will be announced soon," Ms Isaraporn said.
