Briton dies in island hotel pool

TRAT — A British woman was found dead in a hotel swimming pool on Koh Chang on Sunday.

Rachel Ann Turner, 43, was found lying face down in a two-metre deep section of the pool floor by a hotel staff member at about 6am.

Koh Chang police investigator Auraungkoon Kaewmuangklarng told Thai Rath Online that Turner and her husband Stefan Peter Brown, 45, checked into the hotel on Saturday evening.

The officer quoted Mr Brown as saying that he had an argument with Turner around 9 or 10pm that night and went to bed. A staff member alerted him about the drowning in the morning.

Pol Lt Auraungkoon said hotel employees saw the couple having a fierce quarrel on their room balcony before both went inside.

They may have been under the influence of alcohol when they quarrelled as several empty bottles of alcoholic drinks were found in their room, he said.

An initial autopsy performed at Koh Chang Hospital confirmed the British tourist died from drowning. Mr Brown would be further questioned, while Turner's body would be sent for a formal autopsy to the Institute of Forensic Science at Police General Hospital in Bangkok, Pol Lt Auraungkoon said.
