Dyeing factories accused of polluting canal

Residents living along both sides of Khlong Mon canal in Phra Samut Chedi district of Samut Prakan province say untreated water being discharged by three dyeing factories is polluting the canal with disastrous consequences to their businesses, Thairath Online reported.

Chatchawal Klamsaeng, chairman of the Khlong Mon Community, on Sunday led about 50 residents in tambon Nai Khlong Pla Kot to lodge a complaint against the three factories with Phra Samut Chedi police.

They said the factories near Moo 2 and Moo 13 villages had released untreated water with a foul smell into the canal which is the only source of water for their fish ponds.

The badly polluted water caused fish in their ponds to die, causing at least 500,000-baht damage to each pond, they said.

After receiving the complaint, Pol Maj Sunthorn Pimpan, an investigator at Phra Samut Chedi police station, went to examine the canal along with the residents and confirmed it was polluted as alleged.

Mr Chatchawal said the residents had lodged a complaint with many agencies, including the provincial industry office, many times. Following each complaint, officials were sent to inspect the canal but no action had been taken to improve its deteriorating condition.
