Gambling bank robber's girlfriend tips off police

A 32-year-old arrested for robbing a Thanachart Bank branch in Chiang Mai told police he was desperate for money to pay off football gambling debts.

Chonlathit Yensuthon, of Lampang, was apprehended in Muang district of Chiang Mai on Monday evening after his girlfriend tipped off the police, said Pol Maj Gen Pracha Rattanaphan, deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 5.

The suspect was allegedly armed with a with a pistol when he robbed the Thanachart Bank's  Minmanhemin branch and made off with 129,000 baht on May 15.

Mr Chonthalit, 32, confessed to the robbery charges, accordng to police.

He said the need for money to pay football gambling debts drove him to rob the bank.  Before the holdup,  he checked out the bank several times, watching what was going on there. The robbery took about 15 minutes.
