Assistance has started to reach a ten-year-old girl who was forced to drop out of school to look after her blind 70-year-old father in their remote home in Ratchaburi province.

Representatives of the Thai Red Cross, local police, local administration organisations and a human security office brought necessities and cash to Manaswee Thabthim, 10, at the house where she lives with her father, Thing Thabthim, in the area of Moo 3 village in Tha Khoei sub-district of Suan Phung district on Wednesday.

The officials provided the poor family with rice, dried food, drinking water and money. It was reported that the girl and her father had to drink from a dirt pond because the state's monthly 600-baht allowance for the elderly was insufficient.

Health officials also checked the condition of the girl and her father. The girl reportedly suffered from chest pain and breathing difficulty.

Among the people who brought help on Wednesday was Patcharaporn Sawaengsak, president of the Ratchaburi Red Cross, who said the girl should be in school and she would be given a bicycle to get there.

She also offered to arrange for medical treatment for the girl and her father at a local hospital.

On Wednesday health volunteers cleaned their house and tried to eliminate lice on the girl's head.

It was reported that the girl had to quit school recently because her father went blind after a motorcycle accident.
