Five hurt as truck crashes into 15 vehicles at red light

At least five people, including a monk, were injured when a 22-wheel trailer truck loaded with cement crashed into the rear of a queue of 15 vehicles stopped at a red light in Prachin Buri’s Kabin Buri district on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred on Suwannasorn Road on the Kabin Buri-Sa Kaeo route in Muang Kao of Kabin Buri district, said Pol Lt Saneh Detsupha, a duty officer at Kabin Buri police station, who was alerted to the crash around 11am on Thursday.

The incident blocked the road and resulted in heavy traffic congestion in the area for several hours, depite the best efforts of traffic police.

Police sent to the scene and found 16 damaged vehicles - seven cars, five pickup trucks, three passenger vans and a 22-wheel trailer truck, Thai media reported on Thursday.

At least five people were injured in the crash and rushed to a nearby hospital. The exact number of the injured was still not clear.

Van driver Somchai Meethawee, 49, told police he had 14 passengers aboard and was waiting at the traffic light when the truck ran into the left side of his vehicle. The impact injured several passengers, including a monk.

The trailer truck driver, Sudjai Sukjaem,  57, told police he was  en route to deliver cement to a customer in Cambodia when the truck's brake system failed, resulting in it ramming into the other vehicles at the red light. The truck belongs to Saraburi Express Co.

Police were investigating.
