Officer hangs himself at police station

A police officer hanged himself in his boss's office at a police station in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thien district over the weekend, but his body was not found until Sunday night when he colleagues investigated a foul odour.

Police officers at Samae Dam police station noticed a stench eminating from a locked room on the first floor, so they broke in and found the body.

Pol Sgt Maj Suthin Boonchuay, 48, had hanged himself from the curved steel window using a television cable. It is believed he had been dead for two or three days when his body was found.

There was no sign of a struggle or a break-in, according to Pol Maj Thanongsak Phetprakorb, a senior investigator at Samae Dam police station

Pol Sgt Maj Suthin was an assistant to Pol Lt Col Phatsawee Kamnerddee, another senior investigator at the station, in whose office he was found dead.

Pol Sgt Maj Suthin earlier borrowed 40,000 baht from a loan shark to place as surety for a junior fellow officer. His wife was worried he might not get the money back and that if the case went to court her husband might have a problem at work. The couple had quarrelled over the matter.

He had worked as normal on Friday until the evening. His colleages noticed a smell  late the next day, but thought it might be a dead rat because the rodents were often found in the document room next door. By Sunday evening the smell had become foul, so they sought out the source and ended up finding his body.

It was suspected Pol Sgt Maj Suthin took his own life because of the stress he faced over the debt, but investigators were continuing to make inquiries.
