RAYONG — A Chinese man drowned in the waters off Koh Samet on Tuesday.

Wang Lei, 53, was swimming with his Chinese friends in front of White Sand Beach Resort when he disappeared, police quoted Wang's Thai tour guide as saying.

Officials attached to Khao Lam Ya and Moo Koh Samet National Park were staging a marine-rescue drill nearby and were alerted to the incident. They were able to pull him from the water and performed CPR, but failed to save his life.

Wang was in the group of Chinese holidaymakers who had travelled from Pattaya to Koh Samet.

His body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Science at Police General Hospital in Bangkok for an autopsy to officially conclude the cause of death, police said.
