A 25-year-old Kuwaiti tourist died after his ankle straps came off during a bungee jump on Patong beach in Phuket.

The man, whose name has been withheld, sustained serious injures from the fall at World Bungee Jump on the popular tourist beach on Sai Nam Yen Road in tambon Patong, said Pol Maj Theerasak Boonsaeng, a duty officer at Kathu police station, who was alerted around 6pm on Wednesday.

The jumper was rushed to Patong beach and pronounced dead shortly later.

Police rushed to the hospital and found the blood-soaked body of the tourist in an emergency room. He was wearing only black shorts.

An X-ray showed he suffered a broken neck and ribs, Thai media reported on Thursday.

A police investigation found that a pickup truck delivered the tourist to the hospital and the driver told hospital staff that the man had suffered chest pain and collapsed.

As hospital staffers were not convinced by his story, he admitted the tourist was injured from a fall during a bungee jump. The driver left the hospital, leaving the injured tourist at the hospital.

The Phuket News confirmed that the police have closed down World Bungee Jump until their investigation is complete.

Pol Col Chaiwat Ouikham, superintendent at Kathu police station, led a team of police to investigate a spot where the Kuwait had made his jump. The Phuket News reported that as he rebounded from the bottom of his dive the ankle straps came off, and he crashed to the ground next to a lake under the platform.

Employees at the jump site took police to inspect a spot where the victim fell. No reporters were allowed inside.
