The state workers union has demanded the labour minister grant a pay rise to state enterprises to bring them to the same salary level as government officials.

Manop Kuarat, deputy secretary-general of State Enterprises Workers Relations Confederation (Serc), said the workers deserved a 4% salary increase similar to that which came into effect for government officials on Dec 1, 2014. He said there were more than 200,000 state workers around the country.

Mr Manop also said new state enterprise workers with bachelor's degrees should receive a starting salary of 15,000 baht .

Labour Minister Surasak Kanjanarat said he would discuss the matter with relevant organisations including the Finance Ministry, the State Enterprise Policy Commission and the cabinet.

If the cabinet approves a rise, the management of state enterprises will work out the salary increase in detail to suit their financial status and workers' performances, Gen Surasak said.
