No agencies found that represent Rohingya

No registered organisations in Bangkok are representing Rohingya migrants, Provincial Administration Department director-general Kritsada Phuangraj said Thursday.

Mr Kritsada, who serves as the registrar of Bangkok-based associations, said the department has checked records of registered foundations and associations in Bangkok, but none were representing the Rohingya ethnic minority.

However, he has instructed all 76 provincial governors, in their capacity as registrars of provincial associations, to check for any registered organisations in their respective provinces that have been linked to Rohingya migrants.

Authorities have begun investigating groups representing the ethnic minority in the country after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha earlier expressed concern there were organisations that might have been colluding in the trafficking of Rohingya from Myanmar to Thailand.

On Wednesday, Deputy Defence Minister and army chief Udomdej Sitabutr said the army, navy and air force continue to carry out patrols looking for illegal migrants, including Rohingya.

He ordered the Internal Security Operations Command and police to investigate groups set up by and representing the Rohingya, to ensure they have legal status and are operating appropriately.

Thai authorities rescued five Rohingya migrants, including a boy, found swimming in the sea after their boat capsized near Koh Takrut in Ranong's Muang district. The migrants, who looked weak, were brought ashore and given food and drinking water.
