"The new promotion sounds like it will be cheaper or better. Not exactly. The new fares are much more expensive, and the BTS  continues to raise them," Twitter user @kwanmanie wrote on her post on Monday.

@kwanmanie added that railway fares in Kuala Lumpur are approximately 1.6 to 2.6 ringgit (16 to 26 baht), but the BTS charges up to 30 baht.

Twitter user @539068 wrote that the normal train fare is 10 baht per trip, or 20 baht per roundtrip.

The new promotional prices, to take effect on July 1, 2015, are 3 baht higher for adults and 2 baht higher for students.

Members of the social media criticised the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) for using to word "promotion" in an attempt to mislead commuters.

The BTS was not available for comment.
