The Transport Ministry will approve another rise in the fares of metered taxis serving Bangkok and an increase in passenger surcharges at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in July.

Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said that he would follow the previously announced policy of a two-stage taxi fare increase, for a total of 13%. The first rise of 8% was in December, and the second increment of 5% would be six months later, or this July.

"The second increase will go ahead as planned. Details should be finalised by the end of June," the transport minister said.

The fare surcharge for taxis picking up passengers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports was likely to rise from 50 to 60 baht for normal taxis and from 50 to 80 baht for bigger taxis, ACM Prajin said. However, the exact charge had not been finalised.

The minister did not rule out the possibility that Airports of Thailand would subsidise the surcharge increase.
