A taxi driver returned a bag containing cash, plane tickets and passports to an Indian family of three, just hours before they were to board a plane back home on Sunday.

Ankur Gumber and his wife Rashi, both 31, and their six-year-old son took a taxi driven by 43-year-old Surasee Bootprom from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Lebua Hotel on Silom Road late on Friday night.

Mr Gumber let his son, who sat next to Mr Surasee, keep a shoulder bag which contained banknotes in US, Chinese, Thai and Indian currencies worth more than 50,000 baht, plane tickets, passports and an iPad. The boy left the bag on the car floor when the family got out of the cab.

Mr Surasee said he later picked up several other passengers that night but all of them sat in the back seat. He only discovered the bag when he washed his car on Saturday morning. He gave the bag to Sor Wor Por 91 police radio station which later contacted Mr Gumber to pick up the bag at noon today.

Mr Gumber, a frequent visitor to Thailand where he purchases clothing for resale in his home country, said he did not think he would get his belongings back and was very glad because his family was due to fly back to India at 5pm Sunday. He thanked Mr Surasee and gave him US$100 (about 3,300 baht), saying he was very impressed by the cab driver’s honesty.
