Advertising spending in May totaled 12.16 billion baht, up 27.84% year-on-year, as digital television continued to gain momentum with growth of 891.98% in the month, according to media researcher Nielsen Thailand.

Expenditure on ads with the 21 digital TV channels totalled 3.46 billion in May, and accounted for 28.47% of the total amount.

Digital TV commanded the second largest portion of ad spending, behind the 5.05 billion baht advertising revenue of the six analog TV channels, which accounted to 41.52% of the total. However, analog TV advertising in the month was down 7.95% y-o-y.

Newspapers ranked third, reaping 1 billion baht in advertising for the month, down 2.23% y-o-y and  amounting to 8.3% of total spending.

Instore advertising spending was at the bottom with only 28 million baht in the month, down 79.56% y-o-y and accounting for 0.23% of the total.

For the first five months of the year, digital TV saw rocketing growth of 2,440.33% over the same period of 2014, with total advertising spending of 15.37 billion baht, or 26.91% of total spending of 57.11 billion (up 26%).

Analog television posted 24.42 billion baht of advertising spending from January to May, down 7.16% and amounting to 42.76% of the total.
