Prince to lead bike ride for Her Majesty

HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will lead a bike ride in the city on Aug 16 as a tribute to Her Majesty the Queen on her 83rd birthday.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha confirmed Thursday the government will hold the "Bike for Mom 2015" event to be in line with the Crown Prince's initiative to express his gratitude to the Queen and mark her 83rd birthday this year.

The ride, which will cover 43km, will be held on Sunday starting at 3pm while every province will also take part in the event.

The circular route in the capital will start at Dusit Palace before heading to the 11th Infantry Regiment King's Guard on Phahon Yothin Road and returning to the start point. In the provinces, the ride will start in front of each city hall.

"Let us make a historic moment for our country. Be part of this special event that will be remembered for years," Gen Prayut said.

The premier said the Queen has always supported cycling as it is one of the simplest forms of exercise.

The prince is also interested in cycling and is concerned about the safety of cyclists in Thailand, Gen Prayut said, adding the prince had asked the government to devise measures to boost road safety.

Gen Prayut said the prince also expressed his concerns over the route as the rainy season has started and asked authorities to work hard to ensure participants will be safe.

"Bike for Mom 2015" is aimed at promoting cycling as a way to maintain health and cultivate a love of exercise.

The event will reflect a sense of national unity among Thais, the premier said.

People who wish to take part in the event can register at www.bikeformom.com, starting from July 1-24, and follow programme updates from the website. There are 90,000 blue jerseys and 100,000 pins to give away.

The prince has provided his personal funds for giveaways that include the T-shirts, pins and 500,000 bottles of water.

Participants are urged to join the event wearing blue shirts.
